On Feburary 8, 2013 at 2:59pm, our beautiful son Alpin Polycarp Miksza is born! Weighing in at 7lbs 2oz and 20" long. Words cannot describe the joy of his birth, and seeing his perfect little self. Eyes wide open and fully interested in the world. A head full of jet black hair, and the cutest little hands and feet with the softest skin. It's sappy, but true. The midwife and nurses at Kaiser Walnut Creek took great care of us, and we had our families there to support us through the delivery and the first days together in the hospital.
He is named Alpin because he is our little mountain baby. It harkens the mountains and also alpenglow, the beautiful light on mountains (especially granite) at sunrise and sunset. Alpin traditionally comes from a very old Scottish family, from the
House Ailpin, a dynasty of Scottish Kings dating back to 840 AD. Polycarp comes from Andy's father's family. Andy's Great Grandfather's first name was
Polycarp, after the saint and martyr (100 AD), and also a very common Polish name. Andy's Grandfather's middle name was Polycarp, and when they immigrated to the US and Andy's father Larry was born, they passed on the middle name as the American version, Paul. Andy's middle name is Paul, but we decided to revert to the original Polycarp.
